Frozen Shoulder Prevention

The frozen shoulder syndrome is also called adhesive capsulitis. This is a condition where in the shoulder capsule swells and becomes stiff then grows in combination with irregular bands of tissue referred to as adhesions. When this happens, it limits the shoulder movement that causes constant pain.

This condition is very painful to the point that it can disable the patient’s shoulder. Patients affected with this condition usually get frustrated because of the slow recovery. Due to this condition patients feel constant pain especially at night and when the climate is cold. With the limited movement of the shoulder, doing manual tasks can be very impossible. When the shoulder is suddenly moved it can inflict a tremendous amount of pain to the patient that can last for several minutes.

Physicians and experts recommend that to be able to avoid frozen shoulder syndrome, the shoulder must be kept mobile. Pain will usually be felt by the patient when the shoulder is already frozen. Increased development of adhesions will limit movement so unless the shoulders is exercised, the pain will be lesser. The shoulder must be moved in all directions. Physical therapy is said to help prevent freezing and will help warm the muscles. In the US, a doctor must refer a patient to undergo physical therapy or occupational therapy. This is to make sure that the proper treatment is provided and to avoid further damage to the patient. The patient can also undergo a home program where in a set of exercises is given for the patient to follow.
